Warning: This article contains discussion of drug addiction which some readers may find distressing.

A man who used to be a heroin addict once described in detail how overdosing felt and how close he came to death.

A YouTuber calling himself Joey the Gypsy went into detail about his former heroin addiction and in a video described how it felt for him to overdose on the drug.

He told people 'don't f**king do it at all' and brought up the scene in Pulp Fiction where Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) takes a large quantity of heroin and almost dies saying it was pretty accurate.

Joey said that when overdosing on the drug you could 'suffocate and you wouldn't even know it'.

"All of a sudden I wake up because I wasn't breathing, and I'm like 'holy shit'," he said.

"I didn't realise that when you OD on heroin, I assumed like your heart stopped or something, but what happens is you're so f**king wasted that when you pass out your body doesn't even breathe.

"Your body is so out of it that your brain isn't even functioning enough to breathe. That's how people OD on heroin, they're so f**ked up that they nod out and their brain doesn't breathe and they suffocate.

"I'm sitting there and every time I nod out what's waking me up is the fact that I'm not breathing, and I'm alone on the street.

"And I realise that if I f**king nod out I'm gonna f**king die. Now fortunately for me I was slightly OD'd, but this is where I learned the harsh lesson about ODing."

He went on to explain that he was 'high as a f**king kite' and 'didn't even f**king care' that he might be about to die.

He said: "I was so f**ked up, I said to myself, 'if it's my time to go it's my time to go'.

"Life was such a chore at that point that I really didn't even care that much. I didn't want to die but I didn't care.

"I really just didn't f**king care, I said to myself 'it's up to God but I'm gonna try to stay awake'. I'm just gonna f**king lay down and die."

Joey explained that for the next couple of hours he was trying to stay awake until the feeling wore off and he was 'out of the woods'.

He went on to talk about a friend who overdosed five times and eventually died during an overdose, saying that 'most of the people I hung out with back then are dead of a heroin overdose'.
