Everything that happens to your body when you quit smoking for 30 days

Many are currently taking part in Stoptober

Over 2.5 million people in the UK have taken part in Stoptober since the NHS first introduced the initiative in 2012, and October 2025 will be no different as smokers look to kick the habit for good.

Smoking has long been popular across the world, and while it has been banned in public places since 2007, it's enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years, especially with the introduction of the infamous electronic cigarette - or vape, as they're more fondly known.

Despite most of us being hit with health warnings about smoking for much of our lives, the same can be said about alcohol, and it's unlikely that everyone will be convinced to give that up anytime soon.

It is said that even one cigarette can take some time off your life, so it's perhaps no surprise that quitting also comes with some health benefits.

Vaping now offers a way to help those addicted to smoking, as simulations have consistently shown that the smoke from a cigarette will do far more damage to your lungs, so long as the vape is enjoyed in moderation and not used constantly, as young kids have unfortunately suffered the consequences of using them too often.

The NHS suggest that quitting for just 28 days makes a smoker five times more likely to be able to give it up completely, and given the things that can happen after just a few hours without a smoke, it's no surprise that so many people will be giving Stoptober a go this month.

After 20 mintes

As little as 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your blood pressure and pulse rate will begin to drop, MedicalNewsToday says, while your circulation should also get a welcome boost.

After eight hours

Eight hours on and oxygen levels will improve, while your body should also start to cleanse itself.

After a whole day

If you're not already convinced by lasting eight hours, then going a full day can lower your chances of suffering a heart attack in the future.

After two days

This will be heaven for your mouth, as your sense of smell should become more vivid and your taste buds should return to normal.

After three days

Energy levels will increase after three days while it is also likely that you'll find it easier to breathe, which is always a nice benefit to have.

After two weeks

It's after two weeks that your organs will start to perform better, with lung function improving and circulation also getting a nice boost, as blood can pump through the heart and muscles more easily.

After a whole month

For those of you who can hold on for the whole month, coughing and shortness of breath should decrease significantly, while hair-like structures called cilia, which are found in your lungs, will regain their typical function, meaning that mucus can be moved out of the lungs more easily.

You will also find it easier to clear the lungs and fight off infection.

So, if you can give it up for a month, then there should be no reason why you can't stop completely, and enjoy these benefits for the rest of your life.
