England's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final is another oh-so near to wear you down through the years, but there are plenty of reasons to feel optimistic about the future of this team.
Gareth Southgate had led England to their first two major tournament finals since 1966, though there are doubts over whether he will stay on as manager.
He said it wasn't the time to talk about his future just yet, and we'll see what happens in the coming days on that front.

While it's a defeat for England and losing a final is a gutting result, there have been plenty of messages sent to the Three Lions reassuring the team that they'd done the country proud even if they didn't come home as champions of Euro 2024.
One of those sending in messages of well wishes was King Charles III, who had previously sent in a humorous message ahead of the final asking if the players could have things wrapped up before extra time.
In the wake of England's defeat the King told the manager and players to 'hold your heads high'.

He said: "Although victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless my wife and I join all my family in urging you and your support team to hold your heads high.
“All those who have participated in sporting activities at any level will know how utterly despairing such a result can feel when the prize was so near - and will join me in sending heartfelt sympathy, even as we congratulate Spain.
“But please know that your success in reaching the European Championship final is a really great achievement in itself, and one that brings with it the pride of a nation which will continue to roar for the Three Lions today - and in the many triumphs which I have no doubt lie ahead.
“Charles R.”

His son Prince William was in attendance at the game along with his own son George, and echoed his father's words, saying: "This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you. Onwards. W."
The final result may be difficult to take but there will always be more tournaments and more opportunities for football to come home.
In the end that's what it's really all about, even if we end a tournament in defeat we still believe and no matter how many years of hurt pile up they'll never stop us dreaming.

Congratulations to Spain, the better team won at the end of the day.
