Hanks was appearing on the show ahead of his upcoming movie release, A Man Named Otto – a comedy for which the official synopsis reads: "When a lively young family moves in next door, grumpy widower Otto Anderson meets his match in a quick-witted, pregnant woman named Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside down."
As well as discussing what it was like to act with his son in the film, Hanks opened up about releasing his 'inner grouch', prompting laughter from both the audience and other guests on the sofa.
However, some viewers were left far from amused by Hanks' appearance on the late-night chat programme, and have flooded onto Twitter to voice their opinions.
