Oldest man in the US reveals key secrets for a long and healthy life

He's still feeling in good nick

We probably all dream of a healthy and happy life and if there's one person who we should take advice from when it comes to achieving that, it's probably America's oldest man.

Luis Cano was born in Colombia all the way back in 1914 but has spent the last three decades in US, moving to New York in the 1990s with his wife before switching to New Jersey after her death in 2004.

The centenarian was asked how he was feeling at the grand old age of 111 and simply replied 'good', which is perhaps evidence that those who overcomplicate things are ones who struggle for happiness.

But he was able to share a few more words about exactly what his secret to long life was, and it appears as if he was well ahead of the trend when it comes to avoiding alcohol.

He said: “Don’t drink a lot. Get good sleep and don’t smoke.”

Well, if you didn't already believe the significant health advice about alcohol and going sober, the importance of getting a good night's sleep and the disastrous side effects of smoking and vaping, then Luis Cano should be evidence enough.

He also said that the key to living a good life is to 'behave well', which a lot of people should perhaps take heed of, because frankly it seems like nobody in charge of the world is behaving very well at all right now. If only we had a worldwide naughty corner that we could put them in.

Cano is naturally not as active as he once was and entertains himself by looking out of the window and reflecting on his life, while also watching the planes go by, as he's had a life-long interest in aviation.

He also loves to fish, another activity which no doubt keeps him feeling peaceful and close to nature, rather than the silly internet activities we all keep ourselves entertained with nowadays.

Cano was recently certified as the 112th-oldest person in the world by LongeviQuest, which keeps track of other centenarians across the world.

Although he had no formal education, Cano served in the Colombian army, started his own bus company and had 10 children with his wife, which I'm sure kept him very busy and very happy for a long time.

Now, he continues to live with two of his children and has a further five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, so he will have plenty of visitors to keep him entertained as well.

I think we could all learn a lesson from Cano about how we should be aiming to live our lives, as we often make things too complicated when happiness can often be found in the simplest of places.
