An exorcist has shared one moment which made him believe that the devil is real.

Father Carlos Martins has performed exorcisms all over the world, as well as hosting a podcast where he describes some of the hair-raising experiences he's had while carrying out his work.

Over the years, Father Martins says that he believes demons are capable of being highly manipulative, but also of understanding us very deeply so they can tailor their manipulations to the person they're targeting.

In a chilling moment, Father Martins revealed that he had been followed by one demon over the course of his life, which called itself 'Confusion', though he explained that demons don't give their real names.

"Normally, a demon hides its name, and if you wear them down enough and he concedes to give you a name, 99 times out of 100 it's not his real name," he said on his podcast The Exorcist Files. "He gives you something fake."

Initially, the exorcist was an atheist before finding religion, and then being called to the priesthood, the Daily Mail reported.

"It just became obvious that the devil is real, and when I encountered the devil for the first time, none of that was a surprise," said Father Martins.

And it was during his first exorcism that he recalled a demon telling him: "You were supposed to be one of us."

The priest explained that physical things like 'levitating chairs' would be more expected with less experienced exorcists, because it would intimidate the younger priests as it was 'too crazy', but said that as he became more experienced he saw it less.

"What about the 89th time you see it? You're going to care less and less and less each time," he explained.

So what was the scariest part then? Well, it wasn't the physical things, but the sense of the devil, the exorcist said.

"Even the stuff that he did to his victims didn't faze me as horrific as it was," he said.

"What was much more fearsome than the physical phenomena that you see in the room, what you see, what you hear, what you feel in the room, is the mind of the devil, the evil he's capable of, the mind games he will play."

Not only that, but he explained that 'the devil has spent your whole life perceiving you, watching you, taking notes,' so knows how to target someone specifically.

"It’s so he knows how to present a really tantalizing temptation to you," he said. "So if it's redheads, you like, he's got the perfect redhead. If it's money, if it's power, if it's an opportunity, he will offer those."
