Davina McCall breaks down in tears on Comic Relief as she opens up about her brain surgery

The TV presenter underwent surgery last year

Beloved British presenter Davina McCall became visibly emotional while speaking about her 'pretty mad year' on Comic Relief.

The 57-year-old, who is best known for presenting Big Brother, was one of eight different presenters at the event on Friday (21 March), after the charity's co-founder Lenny Henry stepped down from hosting duties last year.

The 40th Red Nose Day was a roaring success, raising well over £30 million for the charity which included the £2 million brought in from Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing's ultramarathons over the last few days.

Friday's show also included a mini return of The Inbetweeners as actors Joe Thomas and James Buckley re-united for a comedy sketch based on Oasis.

However, one of the show's most emotional moments actually came from McCall herself.

Medics discovered the mum-of-three had a benign brain tumour late last year and she underwent surgery in November to have it removed. So it was great to see her back to her best at Comic Relief, even if she did become understandably emotional after receiving support from the live audience.

McCall said: "Doctors found a benign brain tumour by chance and after a lot of deliberating, I had it removed.

"And it's been quite possibly the hardest thing I've ever been through.

"But this whole experience, weighing up all the risks and all the positive things about having this tumour removed made me really think deeply about what life is all about.

"What really, really matters when things get tough.

"I needed the brilliance and the skill of lots of experts to make me OK."

McCall revealed last month that she had changed her will to include emotional letters to her children ahead of the surgery, over fears that she might have passed away.

But thankfully, with the support of her family and partner Michael Douglas, it seems as if she has been able to make a full recovery.

McCall added: "And oh my goodness, I've needed the love and support of my family and particularly Michael to get me through.

"And tonight and watching Billy Monger's documentary the other night when he visited the projects really made think there are so many people who are scared.

"They're in trouble, they're in danger. So many. We've seen it tonight, right?

"And they don't have the friends, or the money or the support that I did.

"I know I was so lucky. But, we know the experts who can help them."

It was announced at the end of the show that £34,022,590 had been raised for Comic Relief, which helps support communities in the UK and around the world.
