Katy Perry explains true story behind viral Orlando Bloom paddleboard photo

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's holiday in Sardinia eight years ago is still permanently etched in most people's minds

Orlando’s Bloom infamous paddle-boarding incident is one of the most viral photos in the history of the internet.

The actor’s kit-off adventure, joined by partner Katy Perry, went viral when photos of the Pirates of the Caribbean star were released.

Bloom, 47, would joke that he ‘broke the internet’ when the images released, and it’s clear to see why.

The pictures of Bloom straddled aboard a paddle board naked gave full view of his manhood, and spread round the internet like wildfire.

Whilst many would be averse to pictures of their junk spread about the internet, Bloom took it in his stride, joking about the incident.

With Bloom and Perry continuing to share far more details about themselves than we’d maybe like we thought we’d go back eight years to find out the true story of the paddle-boarding-penis-incident.

When asked about the naked photos of her partner, Perry would explain to the Howard Stern Show in 2020 how it came about.

Perry, 39, revealed her fella had also tried to convince her to join him in getting his kit off - but luckily for her, she decided to keep covered up while paddleboarding.

During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 2020, the pop star was asked about the 'famous penis picture' and how it all came about.

She admitted it did cross her mind that they might be photographed, but said Bloom didn't seem too bothered.

Perry, who shares daughter Daisy with the actor, explained: "Well, he tried to get me there [naked] and I was like, 'Nah'.

"In the back of my mind I'm like, I am Jim Carrey in The Truman Show a little bit. Maybe there would be a chance.

"I'm a little bit more of the pragmatic one in the partnership."

The 'Firework' singer went on to say that Bloom had really leaned into the Mediterranean lifestyle during their holiday, so he didn't see a problem with stripping off.

She continued: "It was Europe, and we'd had a pretty chill time for a week, everyone was naked. It was Europe, it was Italy! I think he wanted to fit in with the locals. It was the end of the trip."

Even more hilariously, it seemed that the actor had somewhat predicted that he would go viral just days before it happened - although I doubt he reckoned it would be for the size of his manhood.

Perry said: "Days before, he was talking about Twitter and some statistics about Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings, you know, in good fun. I was like, eye roll, eye roll, eye roll.

She explained: "Then all of a sudden, he was the number one trend on Twitter and I'm just like, how?!"

Be careful what you wish for, eh Bloom?

For those wondering how the Gran Turismo star managed to look so good in the paddleboard shot, he claims it was merely a flattering angle that did him a few favours.

He also sat down with Howard Stern to discuss the viral pictures of his penis, but insisted 'it is really not that big'.

Bloom added: "Things are expanded on cameras with a big optical lens. It is an optical illusion.

"The publicist called to say, 'That is not the worst of it. First of all there were pictures with a block over it.'

"And you make some jokes like: 'Have you got a black box big enough to cover it?'

"And then you suddenly realise somebody is going to uncover the black box because they are going to be paid enough. It's a triple whammy - photos, black box, then no black box."
