Viewers are absolutely blown away by America Ferrera’s monologue in the Barbie movie

The actor touched on why it's so hard to be a woman in today's world.

Fans are being blown away by America Ferraras’ empowering speech in the Barbie movie.

The Ugly Betty actor might just be the unsung hero of the latest flick sweeping the world by storm, with fans praising her feminist monologue, which weighs in on societal expectations and what it means to be a woman.

**Spoiler alert head**

In the movie, Ferrara plays Gloria, a human who Barbie enlists to help restore peace to Barbie Land when the Kens launch a so-called ‘Kendom’, resembling the patriarchy in the real world.

As the Barbies lose their power and status, it’s here that Gloria gives a heartfelt speech where she admits it's ‘literally impossible to be a woman’.

Amen.

“I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing a woman, then I don’t even know,” she says to depressed ‘Stereotypical Barbie’ (played by Margot Robbie) crying on the floor.

And, without giving the entire speech away, it’s safe to say this is one of the more powerful moments in the film.

One Twitter user said she admired how her speech touched on the unattainable beauty standards for women.

“Something about America Ferrara talking about the insane beauty standards of women in the Barbie movie really hit me. She was always considered ‘The fat friend’ in movies when she was a PERFECTLY AVERAGE SIZE, and I (who grew up with a similar body shape) internalized that,” they wrote.

Another said: “Who’s gonna stop me from using America Ferrara’s monologue in Barbie as a dramatic monologue? Literally who.”

A third commented: “Cried during America Ferrara’s speech in Barbie — it gave me such similar vibes as to Jo and Amy’s speeches in Little Women, Greta Gerwig, you fantastical, magical creature.”

While another said: “America Ferrara deserves every award for her Barbie performance. Golden Globe. Critics Choice. MTV. If the Oscar’s finally stop sleeping on comedies, then an Oscar too.”

During an interview, Gerwig admitted that Ferraras’ own writing inspired her brazen monologue.

“When I was working with America in rehearsal, she shared with me, from years earlier, something she’d written in a notebook, which was astonishingly similar to what the speech was,” she told The Times.

“When she gave that speech, it was coming from such an unadorned true place inside of her.”
