Home Alone fans are only just realising one major detail about the £4,000,000 McCallister house

Home Alone fans are only just realising one major detail about the £4,000,000 McCallister house

An iconic Christmas movie that millions are set to watch this festive season

It's finally time to watch Home Alone again without having to justify it not being Christmas (just me, then?).

And fans of the festive flick, which is arguably one of the greatest Christmas films of all time, are still discovering new things about the movie, despite it being released way back in 1990.

Starring Macaulay Culkin as eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, Home Alone follows his exploits as he fends off burglars Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) who try and steal anything valuable from the family home. And it's quite the home, with it being a real house that was recently valued at more than £4,000,000.

The entire debacle happens after Kevin's parents Peter and Kate (John Heard and Catherine O'Hara) accidentally leave him behind when heading to the airport for the family's Christmas trip to Paris.

Turning the family home into an avalanche of booby traps, the grand property becomes a death trap for Harry and Marv, who go by the awful criminal pseudonym of the Wet Bandits.

It is the real life McCallister home - located in Lincoln Avenue in the affluent neighbourhood of Winnetka, Illinois - that is the focus of the recent discovery by fans, who have been debating the very recent modern makeover the property has had.

Gone are the traditional and warm colours in the film, with fond farewells to the browns, reds, and greens spotted throughout the corridors and rooms.

In its place is a minimalist take, filled with greys, whites, and a general neutral theme tying every internal part of the house together.

Fans have been debating the decor over on Reddit, with some saying they despise the change from something so homely to a 'millennial grey' choice more akin to a show home.

On the flip side, others labelled the 1990 house 'perfect for the movie' adding that you have to move with the times.

"It's not uncommon to do a lot of painting and changing of fixtures when staging a home of this value," another explained.

But others have pointed out that the house shown in the film is only partly the real thing. Yes, the external shots are of the very real Winnetka house that exists to this day.

The shots filmed inside, though? Yeah. Not the same place.

Instead of the cosy, warm interior of the McCallister being what was actual behind the doors of the Lincoln Avenue property, it was filmed five minutes away at an abandoned school.

The film's indoor scenes were shot at New Trier Township High School; an abandoned property that was big enough for the production to create the appropriate sets and a sound stage, with director Chris Columbus unable to do the stunts inside the house due to the space needed for the film crew.

Over on Reddit, only a few fans knew the difference between the real house and the set.

"I don't think that was ever the real interior. If you watch the episode of The Movies That Made Us on Netflix, the producers talk about how they designed the set/house to have all red and green," one user wrote.

A second added: "The interior of the real house never looked like what you see in Home Alone. All interior shots were from a set built in a gymnasium, where the production designer purposely used reds and greens to make it feel like Christmas.

"The owner didn’t undo the Home Alone look, it just never looked like that when they lived there."
