A star of the new Mean Girls movie has responded to the lesbian theory about Regina George.
Hitting the US big screens today (12 January) the remake of the iconic 2004 film will be widely available in UK cinemas from 17 January.
And when we say remake, it’s actually the musical movie based on the Broadway musical which was based on the original film. Yeah, it’s a lot.

In case you’ve never been forced (or, you know, made the very understandable decision) to watch the original Mean Girls, it’s about a teen girl who moves to a US high school after growing up in Africa.
She finds herself hanging round with the ‘Plastics’ led by head mean girl, Regina. Here’s the trailer for the new film:
And playing that legendary role of queen bee Regina is singer Reneé Rapp.

The 24-year-old rose to Broadway fame playing the character in the Broadway musical as a teen and is also known for featuring as Leighton Murray in The Sex Lives of College Girls.
Over the 20 years since the original Tina Fey movie dropped, fans have came up with the theory that Regina is actually a lesbian.
Sure, she dates men in the film but people reckon she doesn’t actually like them.
And the ‘Too Well’ singer agrees that the character absolutely has no interest in the men that flock to her.

Rapp told The Times: “No, she doesn’t. She just uses them as a little pawn which is kind of what I’ve done with the men that I’ve dated in the past when I was dating men.”
The star added that she brought elements of herself to playing Regina, as a queer woman.
“I’m gay,” she said. “I’m not out here playing her as a straight girl.”

Ahead of the film coming out, the singer collaborated with rapper Megan Thee Stallion on the banger ‘Not My Fault’ where she sings ‘can a gay girl get an amen?’ and ‘it’s not my fault you came with her, but she might leave with me’.
When asked by Gay Times if Regina is part of the ‘rainbow mafia’, Rapp said for her she ‘absolutely is’.
She said: “I got into an argument on Instagram about this and, hell yeah, I’m arguing on Instagram – so what?

“Somebody was like, ‘She’s not a lesbian’ and I was like, ‘Alright, so maybe she isn’t to you but for me, she is, so shut up. Be mad. Go home. Touch grass. Play in traffic.'"
The ‘Pretty Girls’ singer also said to Them: “[Regina being a lesbian] was always my interpretation of it, still is my interpretation of it. It might not be other people’s, and I truly don’t care. It’s mine, and that’s how I feel.”
Mean Girls hits UK cinemas on 19 January.
