Ryan Gosling is reportedly going to be making an appearance in that galaxy far, far away....
The movie he's set to appear in will be called Star Wars: Starfighter, and the title was confirmed during the recent Star Wars Celebration.
Helmed by Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy, Star Wars: Starfighter is meant to be a 'standalone adventure' feature.
Kathleen Kennedy said that the upcoming movie would be set 'maybe five or six years out' from the events of The Rise of Skywalker, and at the Star Wars Celebration, it was announced that Ryan Gosling will star in the film.
Star Wars fans have offered their reactions to the announcement, and if you know anything about Star Wars fans, you'll know to take what they say with a pinch of salt, because some of them are miserable sods who are impossible to please.
It's going to be a while before Star Wars: Starfighter lands, so now, we play the waiting game (Christopher Jue/Getty Images for Disney) Let's ignore that particular bunch though, and focus on the nicer things people have been saying about 'our new Star Wars guy'.
"We're so back," someone else declared, while a second said they were excited to see Gosling 'make big fun s**t', and there is plenty of room in the house that is Star Wars for that sort of thing.
Others have said they 'think he will do great' and pointed to his performance in Blade Runner 2049 as proof that Gosling has the sci-fi chops to bring something good to the Star Wars universe.
"Can't wait for all the Gosling memes to come out of this film," was another reaction, and someone replied 'new literally me character just dropped' which, if you've spent too long on the internet (likely, if you're here), is a reference you'll probably get.
Another simply said 'I'm definitely whelmed', so now, it's on Star Wars: Starfighter to actually release and live up to the hopes that it'll be a good movie.
Shawn Levy will direct Starfighter, and Ryan Gosling will star in it (Tomohiro Ohsumi/Getty Images for Disney) Of course, Star Wars: Starfighter was also the name of a 2001 video game, which tied in with the events of The Phantom Menace, and it's not the only project to share its name with one of the old games where you go around in starfighters.
The movie Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was announced back in 2020, with details saying it would be directed by Patty Jenkins and be releasing for Christmas 2023.
However, that time has been and gone and the film appears to be stuck in development hell, as it has no current release date and there have been precious few details.
Just to throw my opinion out there, if there's any Star Wars game where you fly spaceships around that deserves some kind of adaptation to screen, then it's surely got to be Tie Fighter.
The success of Andor, which I would not be hyperbolic in saying is one of the best things Star Wars has ever done, shows that there's an audience eager to dive into the inner workings of The Empire and pick apart how it all works.
Star Wars: Starfighter is currently pencilled in for a cinematic release on 28 May, 2027.
