Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena has revealed the real reason that his famously awkward sex scene with Amy Schumer in Trainwreck is so painful to watch.
For those who are unfamiliar with 2015’s Trainwreck, the movie follows Amy Townsend (Amy Schumer) a self-professed monogamy-hater.
After years of promiscuity and having no-strings-attached fun, she meets sports doctor Aaron Conners (Bill Hader). Instantly everything Amy thought she knew about relationships is flipped on its head, and she’s forced to face her fear of actually falling in love.

Making a cameo in the rom-com is Cena. He appears briefly as a love interest to Schumer’s character and is asked to ‘talk dirty to her’ while in bed.
However, the cringeworthy scene apparently wasn’t always supposed to go down as it did. This week, Cena revealed on the Larry King Now show that the scene was originally planned to be a lot less painful.
“It was originally written different,” Cena admitted to King. “It was supposed to be an overly physical scene. Big guy you know, ‘I’m sick of being with this guy because he’s too physical’.”

“And then we got into a room and we started to ad-lib,” he continued. “Both Amy Schumer and Judd Apatow were so receptive to the kind of twist I put on the character that we ditched all the physical humour and just made it a very uncomfortable scene.’
“It was very awkward, and at the end of the day, it ended up being pretty funny,” Cena added.
Schumer herself has also recently had her say about the awkward moment. While speaking on an Australian chat show she said during the scene Cena was, “actually inside of me. Who am I to stop him?”
The actor was obviously joking, however, as she continued to call Cena’s butt, ‘a whole universe.’

“It’s not even human. It felt like having a refrigerator on top of me,” she laughed. “I think [filming the sex scene] was probably harder for him. He had to, like, do something. I just did what I usually do when I have sex. Just lay there.”
Schumer then continued to joke and explain what her biggest on-set Trainwreck regret was.
“You know what? I didn’t get to feel his balls,” she quipped. “It’s a major regret of mine. Major regret.”

Schumer has also hit headlines recently, as it was revealed that she originally rejected the lead role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said that Gerwig and co. “definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it.”
However after Schumer passed on the role, Margot Robbie was eventually cast.
Barbie’s theatrical release is scheduled for 21 July 2023.
