The singer has been no stranger to controversy. Fans of Taylor Swift even started an online campaign urging the singer to reconsider her relationship with him, accusing him of 'engaging in racist remarks, making offensive jokes, and admitting to watching degrading pornography in which people of color are being humiliated and assaulted'.

The appeal continued: "His actions contribute to the perpetuation of hate, stereotypes, and objectification, which targets and hurts some people from the Jewish, Black, Chinese, Hawaiian, Inuit, LGBTQ+ communities. as well as women."
On one occasion, Healy had appeared on the podcast The Adam Friedland Show. During the podcast he said that he had tried to message rapper Ice Spice on Instagram.
The co-hosts of the podcast responded by mocking the rapper's name, and then making racist jokes about Chinese, Hawaiian and Inuit people using imitated accents.
Healy has since indirectly apologised for the podcast. He said at a concert: “Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m annoyed that me joking got misconstrued. It’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m a dick.

On the same episode, Healy also recalledbeing caught watching hardcore porn 'of somebody getting brutalized' after a party, with the porn channel in question often featuring the brutalization or humiliation of Black women.
The 1975 frontman also came under fire for a tweet made during the height of the Black Lives Matter protests in which he linked one of his songs to a tweet.
He later apologised, saying: “Sorry I did not link my song in that tweet to make it about me it’s just that the song is literally about this disgusting situation and speaks more eloquently than I can on Twitter.”
