Fast-food chains are renowned for either giving you too much or too little, but when you need it the most, an extra condiment is nowhere in sight.
If you’ve ever dipped your hand in a McDonald’s bag searching for an additional complimentary packet of sauce and come up empty, you’re not alone.

Salty fries absolutely need a sauce to match, and one sachet often isn’t enough.
As Five Guys is known for handing out extra fries like there’s no tomorrow, you’d expect other chains to at least compete and pop in another sauce but for McDonald’s there’s apparently a formula involved in giving out sauces.
A former McDonald's worker decided to put the question to bed while answering a question posted to Quora: "Are McDonald’s employees told not to give out so much sauce?"
They went on to claim that the company needs to figure out how much to give each order.

Ivan Josiah Lapis wrote: "We're not told not to give out ‘too much sauce’ but instead we are told that each specific purchase has a defined sauce packet given for free."
Lapis shared that he had worked at the chain in 2013 and that for a specific order consisting of four to six nuggets, one packet of sauce would be included with an extra at the worker’s ‘own discretion’.
He explained: “If you got a 10 pack nugget, you are provided two for free automatically and another for free at our discretion, if the customer asks.

“If you got a 20 pack, you get three, and another extra at our own discretion. This extra packet is totally accounted for within the cost but we try to save them so that we can save."
According to the former worker, the company also charges for extra sauces so that they can save money where able to.
He said: “The less you have to spend on these things, the more you can allocate your budget on more pressing losses.
“The main reason we charged for extra packets is to prevent abuse.

“It's fair to assume that two packets of sauce is enough for a six pack nugget, right? If you need more than that, then what the heck are you doing with the nuggets?”
He added: “Realistically we really don't mind giving extra if it makes you happy, just that the price of an item isn't just accounting for the ingredients and materials.
“Most people forget that labor and other expenses such as electricity and gas also needs to be accounted for,' he pointed out. McDonald's doesn't really make much money as you think when it comes to individual sales. So, we save where we can.”

However, Ivan went on to add to the post that he had written it over five years ago and that McDonald’s may have changed its policies, but Kayla Gerard who worked for the chain in 2018 hopped on with her own insights.
She claimed that: “Managers get in trouble for their employees giving away sauce for free.
“It is not that we are being greedy with our sauce, we are just trying to do our jobs without getting in trouble.”
