Destinations revealed as Wetherspoons boss shares huge update on pubs being opened abroad

That 'Spoons?' text could soon require a passport

There’s something about going abroad and exploring the local cuisine, from the different snacks in the supermarket to the little lunch spots.

Oh, and the British and Irish cafes and pubs, obviously.

It seems like no matter what, plenty of holiday spots Brits travel to always have that Union Jack flying or a neon four-leaf clover as tourists flock inside.

And it seems there may be a new addition to that motley crew in various destination. Yep, holidaymakers and expats could soon be seeing a very familiar comfort from home, as the Wetherspoons big boss has shared a huge update on pubs being opened aboard.

A dream for some Brits, Sir Tim Martin has confirmed the chain is considering expanding overseas in the next year.

The Wetherspoons founder and CEO told The Sun: “We are looking at it. There are probably 100 to 200 franchise partnerships in the UK. Now it’s a question of going abroad and it’s a possibility.”

He agreed that popular destinations like Alicante, Benidorm and Mallorca (where Spoons is pretty well known) would ‘make sense’ for the first paddle into the Europe scene.

Martin added that a decision on the first abroad location was probably six months away.

Wetherspoons also told The Independent: “Wetherspoon believes that there are opportunities to open its pubs in overseas airports that are popular with British holidaymakers.

“There is nothing signed or sealed at present. It is still early days.”

And if a Spoons on your holiday is something you’d consider essential, it’s already possible in the UK. So, I guess that kind of ticks the ‘enjoy the local cuisine’ box.

This is as Wetherspoons has pubs going with Haven holiday parks and recently announced plans for four more after a successful franchise at the Primrose Valley site on the North Yorkshire coastline.

Someone who might be travelling abroad for a Spoons is the woman who has a huge 1.5ft tattoo of the chain across her stomach.

Tasha Bentley splashed out £500 on the inking last year and says she reckons she’s ‘one of Wetherspoon’s biggest fans’.

Or, perhaps the couple who have been to 500 of the pubs across the UK will be booking the first flight they can when an abroad Spoons opens.

Phil and Julie Fox have spent over a decade visiting different sites of the chain so maybe their ‘part-time hobby’ will end up coming with some new passport stamps if Martin’s plans come true.
