Thinking about a holiday on a cruise ship soon? It's a great chance to sample the unique experience of traveling the world on water, and enjoying some well earned relaxation time on deck.
Yeah, that sounds incredible, but, one cruise line regular has explained why it's not all rainbows and unicorns on cruise ships.
I know what you're thinking - it's a cruise ship, in the middle of the ocean at night, they're just going to say it's really, really dark. Sorry to disappoint, but that's not the only thing to worry about.

According to this frequent cruiser, one of the biggest concerns around cruises at night is just how rough the ocean can get. Uploading a video to TikTok, he gives us a glimpse of just how rough the sea can get at night, and the dangers that could bring to anyone up on the deck.
TikTok user, chasingthedream.hj shared a video of a swimming pool on the deck of a cruise ship, highlighting just how rough the sea can get at night, and what that means for those out on deck on a cruise holiday.
While you would expect some movement in the pools water while on a ship, in this particular case, the water is literally being thrown out of the pool due to the rough seas.

Although my ADHD brain immediately goes to wanting to swim in those rough sea pools at night, it's probably best for your heath and safety to stay away from them during these periods of turbulence.
In most cases, cruise lines do not prohibit you from going out on the deck at night. Carnival Cruise Line, for example, clearly state that this is allowed, except for when the deck is closed for cleaning.

However, in the case of rough seas, most cruise lines will put out a warning letting passengers know that there are rough seas, and urging them to stay indoors.
Other than the obvious - and by obvious I do mean jumping into a swimming pool while it's swishing around like a washing machine - there is another danger to being out on the deck at night.
Beyond stumbling around in the dark night (not to be confused with the caped crusader - The Dark Knight) there's also the risk of going overboard.
If a person falls overboard on a cruise ship, staff would immediately activate the 'man overboard' emergency protocol.

The cruise ship would then turn around and head to the location where the person fell, and a search and rescue operation would take place.
The captain would would then call in the coast guard. Sadly, these rescue operations from cruise ships historically have a very low success rate.
So, maybe stay clear of the railings while the seas are a bit choppy.
