Customers have been left aghast after Poundbakery started charging more than £1 for some products because of inflation.
Is there nothing that this wretched cost-of-living crisis can’t get to?
With the price of absolutely everything from fuel and energy to food currently skyrocketing, the old adage about there being no such thing as a free lunch has never been so accurate.

While no one was out there asking for Poundbakery to start giving away stuff for free, they did sort of paint themselves into a corner with the name, didn’t they?
Well, it turns out that even Poundbakery aren’t immune to the current financial downturn, and they’ve had to break the unspoken contract of their name by starting to charge more than a quid for some stuff.
Naturally, customers are upset about it, with one even moved to call this ‘the apocalypse’.

The British bakery, which started out in Bolton back in 2009, now has 100 stores around the UK, but it’s the branch in Stockport that started this furore.
A customer went onto Reddit to share their dismay at paying 20p more for a sausage roll than in the past.
The post read: “I was in for a nasty shock this morning when ordering my sausage rolls from the pound bakery.
“They had gone up from £1.00 to £1.20 with no warning...,"

They concluded: “RIP Poundbakery”.
Obviously, a news story as significant as this generated quite a bit of interest, with others chiming in with their comments underneath.
One person said: “The apocalypse is coming."
Another commented: “But it’s the POUND Bakery?! Can we not dob them in to trading standards for false advertising or something?"

Pound (and 20p) Bakery isn’t quite as snappy, is it?
However, others have – rightly – pointed out that £1.20 is still quite reasonable for a sausage roll, and said that they prefer the products that Poundbakery sell, so won’t be swayed in their loyalty.
One such defender said: “The prices are not too bad. We prefer to come here, it’s better than Greggs. Greggs is very expensive.”
Let’s just leave Greggs out of this, shall we?

Others believe that the quality has improved as the price or quantity has changed.
Discussing a cheese and onion slice, a customer at the Salford shop said: “It used to be two for £1 but now it’s just one for £1. But it used to be smaller and they’ve got bigger.
"The quality of food has gone up now.
“The sausage rolls used to be hanging but now they’re dead nice.
“They offer more variety, a meal deal for £2. At Greggs it’s over £3.”
Responding to a comment on Facebook, Poundbakery explained: "The concept of Poundbakery is that we give you more for your Pound."
The spokesperson added: "We are doing what we can to move with the times, to continue in providing better value than our competitors."
LADbible has contacted Poundbakery for a comment.
