Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin shares how pub chain are able to sell drinks for so cheap

He gave a few reasons why

Pub chain boss Tim Martin has explained why drinks prices at Wetherspoons can stay so cheap while everything else seems to be getting more and more expensive.

Anyone who is from or lives in the UK will know of a Wetherspoons.

The pub chain is so popular, that punters have even come up with a game they can play that involves sending other tables food and drinks.

The idea is that you stick your table number on a Facebook group and hope that people send you stuff, one lad's grandma ended up getting quite the surprise when people sent gallons of booze to their table while he was playing.

There are over 800 Wetherspoons pubs in the UK and to operate that, many they must be doing something right.

One of the hallmarks of Spoons, aside from each one having their own unique carpet design, is that the prices are pretty cheap in an industry where the cost of a pint is climbing steadily upwards.

There's lots of fascination involved in how Wetherspoons operates when loads of pubs are struggling and they're able to keep hundreds of places open.

Pub chain boss Tim Martin told The Sun on TikTok what he thought was the reason they could keep prices lower than other pubs.

He said: "I think there's no secret we sell a lot of beer, which is the key thing. We've got bigger pubs than average and we've got very long-term relationships with our beer suppliers.

"They know we're not buying it for three months or six months, our longest contract now has got 17 years to go. I think it's a combination of those things."

He reckoned that Wetherspoons 'average sales per pub are probably far more than double most pubs', so by being able to sell lots of drinks and have longer deals in place with suppliers they could keep the prices lower.

That point about having 'bigger pubs than average' has got to help them as well, Brits out drinking will know that unless the town is packed to the rafters there's sure to be some space in Spoons.

By the way, if you're getting a red plate in Wetherspoons it doesn't mean you've won a competition or been selected for anything special.

Some pubs brought in red plates to put children's meals on, with the idea being that they'd never be heated and kids wouldn't be in danger of burning themselves.

The red plates are still in circulation until they all break, but naturally they're quite a rarity to get.

Meanwhile, Wetherspoons is planning to build the nation's first 'Super Spoons' in Newcastle, and it'll have the biggest beer garden in Britain.
