How much GTA 6 is expected to cost as 2025 release is confirmed

How much GTA 6 is expected to cost as 2025 release is confirmed

Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive, the businesses behind Grand Theft Auto VI, issued a huge update in their February earnings call

Grand Theft Auto VI fans have finally had an update on the release of the most anticipated video game of all time.

But question marks still remain over how much GTA 6 will cost gamers when they finally download it or head to the shops to purchase a physical version.

For now, that sound you can hear right now is a big sigh of relief, as the latest update from parent company Take-Two Interactive is not bad news in the slightest.

In its quarterly earnings call on Thursday (6 February), the parent company of GTA developer Rockstar issued company updates on the products that it makes in the gaming world and in particular, when we can expect them.

When will GTA 6 be released?

Documents from Take-Two confirmed GTA 6 can be expected in the fall of 2025, or autumn to non-American folk. We're talking September, October, or November.

"Looking ahead, this calendar year is shaping up to be one of the strongest ever for Take-Two, as we plan to launch Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on February 11, Mafia: The Old Country in the Summer, GTA 6 in the Fall, and Borderlands 4," the paperwork revealed.

Speaking to IGN about the release of GTA 6 in particular, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was honest at the timeframe that is pencilled in, rather than set in stone.

"Look, there's always a risk of slippage and I think as soon as you say words like absolutely, you jinx things. So we feel really good about it," Zelnick said.

"I think the game is eagerly anticipated both internally and externally. We know that Rockstar seeks perfection. I never claim success before it occurs. Our whole organisation is super excited."

Currently, video games are capped at around $70, or £55, for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

It is something that has gradually increased over time as the cost of making more complicated and better looking products becomes the norm.

Back in 2013 when GTA 5 was released on the PS4 and Xbox One, the price was roughly $60, or £50.

Given how much time and money has been spent on GTA 6 ahead of release as Rockstar 'seeks perfection', one analyst has suggested the product could be as expensive as $100 (£80).

He also offers a conservative estimate of $80 (£65), which would be more in line with the historical trends seen in the gaming industry.

The research comes from Matthew Ball, a venture capitalise and analyst, who produced a 220-page breakdown in to the gaming industry and how GTA 6 can help pave the way following years of layoffs and businesses shutting down.

Why would a $100 price tag for GTA 6 help the gaming industry?

It is all to do with setting new pricing boundaries that gamers as a whole would have to get used to if they want to keep up the past time. Ultimately, that brings in more money in to these companies making the games and in turn makes them more financially viable.

Ball wrote: "There is hope that Take-Two will price GTA VI at $80 or even $100, thereby breaking a key price barrier and enabling the rest of the market to move up, too."

Fans think $100 GTA 6 price tag is 'crazy'

As you can imagine, the concept of paying 100 bucks for GTA 6 hasn't gone down too well with those who will buy it.

Over on the subreddit for the game, one Redditor wrote: "Crazy in my opinion. Even $70 is pushing it."

Others also said Rockstar has no need to do this in a world where micro-transactions after launch are becoming more common. The best example of this is Fortnite; a free to play game where you can spend real money in-game to purchase exclusive items for your playable character.

One Reddit user wrote: 'one said: "Dude says games need to be $100 to 'grow the gaming market'.

"I thought that was what micro-transactions were doing. Games don't need to be $100 when people spend an extra $100 to $1,000."

This was echoed by another, who posted: "What a dumb conversation. GTA 6 will cost 70 bucks and Rockstar will spend the next decade making billions off GTA 6 Online. They are not going to risk reducing their potential player base for the online component by charging 100 bucks for the game."
