2024 has the pleasure of being a leap year, with that extra day being added to the end of February, though many argue we shouldn't have leap years at all.

29 February is also a day where women can break the tradition of waiting for the man to propose and carry out the deed themselves, according to Irish tradition.
It has the potential to be one of the most romantic days of the year, but this Australian woman found out that this isn't always the case when proposing on a radio show.
Carly had been with her partner Brad for five years prior to the proposal, and went live on the most popular breakfast show in Melbourne, 101.9 The Fox's Fifi, Fev & Nick, yesterday (29 February).

On the day known as Bachelor's Day or Ladies' Privilege, Carly seemed optimistic about her prospects before the call, believing she would be engaged after it.
They got Brad on the show, and Carly began: "It’s been the most incredible five years of my life with you.
"Every morning, I wake up as the luckiest girl alive. You make me feel like nothing else I’ve ever felt before."
Carly continued, saying he was her everything, her be-all and end-all, then she popped the question: "I love the person you are, and the person I am is totally because of you. I can’t wait to do this forever … will you marry me?”

Brad began to get incredibly uncomfortable afterwards, with this call becoming memorable for all the wrong things.
At first, he thought she was joking, before saying that it wasn't the kind of thing he'd want to do on air, adding: "It’s a big deal and I’m a pretty traditional kind of guy as you know."
Brad continued: "I don’t want to seem like I’m not grateful or anything… you know I love you, babe.

"I dunno, I’m feeling pretty shocked right now."
Feeling awkward after the call, host Fev said: "That could be the most uncomfortable I’ve ever felt on radio."
Luckily, the hosts later provided an update on the couple, getting Brad and Carly back on the show.
Carly said she felt 'mortified' following the call, with loved ones checking up on her, but Brad actually proposed to her at dinner that evening.

He revealed that he had been planning it and even bought the ring, so the radio proposal wasn't part of the plan.
See? It's a happy ending after all.
