Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star together in a new romantic drama by A24

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh 'didn't hear cut' while filming a sex scene for their new romantic drama.

Directed by John Crowley, the film follows up-and-coming chef Tobias (Garfield) and recent divorcée Almut, (Pugh), after a surprise encounter changes their lives forever.

The pair fall in love and embark on a deeply-moving romance, with a horror cancer diagnosis to deal with ahead.

Take a look at the emotional trailer for We Live in Time below:

In an interview with Josh Horowitz at 92nd Street Y in New York, Garfield admitted that he and Pugh didn't hear the cameraman shouting 'cut' during one particularly passionate sex scene.

"We were doing the first take of this very intimate, passionate scene and it's a closed set which means it's only me and Florence and the camera operator who's a lovely man called Stuart," said Garfield.

"And he's very polite and very sweet and gentle. The director's in another room next door.

"And so the scene becomes passionate and we get into it as it were and we go a little bit further than we were meant to... it's feeling safe and we just kind of... go from the next thing to the next thing and we'll let this progress and we'll just carry on."

Opening up about their special on set 'bond' during a Q&A at Toronto International Film Festival, Pugh said: "We did rehearse, we had, I think, two weeks of really special, beautiful time, which is always such a wonderful thing when you get rehearsal time for any movie, where we would just talk through scenes, talk through how we felt.

"John was very good about stopping it when it got a bit too exciting and he wanted to save it for the day, which I'm always a big fan of.

"But I think, you know, today was the first day that we've both been talking about it since we experienced doing the film together and so much, so many, of our memories of the way that we connected and and how we built this chemistry was through the total enjoyment of falling deeper and deeper into it every day."

She added: "Our connection is because of that, is because we made a movie about something that's very, very real and we knew how serious that is."

Meanwhile, Pugh revealed that she was getting tips off a midwife when filming the birth scene.

To get all the shots, the actor said she had to do 15-minute births eight times, explaining: "The only problem was I didn't have a baby that came out so, I was just so exhausted and sweaty and tired and I got no endorphins or anything.

"But what was amazing is we worked with a midwife in the rehearsal period and we started blocking out the scene and then I continued working with her.

"I've never had a child, which is pretty key to knowing how to have a baby, but I do know a lot of amazing women that have had loads of babies and I've heard all of their stories and I really know how important it is for it to look and sound right.

"So I was with Penny the midwife and she would be teaching me about the different sounds and where it would fall and how it would land on this and that and where it would be hurting and it was just so fascinating."

We Live in Time is set to be released in the UK on 1 January, 2025.
