Whilst many fans may have been wary following the last couple of GOT seasons, House of the Dragon season one was universally acclaimed following its release.

The show received a Primetime Emmy nomination for ‘Best Drama Series’, as well as seven further nominations and a whopping 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes to boot.
House of the Dragon is set 100 of years prior to the events of GOT - well before Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Hodor (no I’m still not over it).
It follows the Targaryen family back when they ruled the Seven Kingdoms with massive castle-spanning dragons under their command.

The show focuses predominantly on the infighting within the family – which threatens to tear them apart and plunge Westeros into all-out war.
Fans of the first season were pleasantly shocked by the content which, even by the high standards of GOT, was pretty unexpected.
At the core of the show is a multi-year love story between Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) and her uncle, Matt Smith’s creepy Daemon Targaryen.

Add to that incesty will-they-won’t-they, a dollop of beheadings, graphic sex, and people being burned to death, and the show is a guaranteed conversation starter.
The second season has the scene set by the events of season one where, *SPOILERS*, Rhaenyra becomes queen after the death of her father, Viserys Targaryen (played by Paddy Considine) - much to the chagrin of former best friend and now-mother-in-law Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).
Based on first-look posters released yesterday and the teaser trailer released last year, the sophomore outing of the show looks to be a battle between those backing Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne on Team Black and those in support of Alicent and her son, Aegon Targaryen, on Team Green.

George R.R. Martin, author of the Game of Thrones series, as well as the book House of the Dragon is based on, Fire and Blood, has seen the first two episodes of the new season and says they are ‘very dark’.
The author told IGN: “I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work… but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. “
He went on to say: "Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry.
“Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like."
I mean, it wouldn't be GOT without a bit of heartbreak.
House of the Dragon season 2 will be available for UK viewers to watch on NOW TV via Sky.
